Component layout and installation tooling for the DN700 Instant-Lock mechanical repair sleeve. 3 mm stainless shell, EPDM seal, and packer positioning.

Repairing an isolated crack, offset joint, or root infiltration in a DN700 (28-inch) sewer or stormwater main without open trench excavation demands high structural integrity. Traditional resin patches can wash out in wet conditions, whereas full-length CIPP relining is costly for a localized defect. Mechanical internal sleeves provide an engineered, immediate-return-to-service alternative.

As demonstrated in the [Reliance DN700 Instant-Lock Repair Sleeve Video](https://reliancetrenchless.com/videos/dn700-instant-lock-repair-sleeve), the assembly consists of a rolled **3 mm thick stainless steel shell**, a **300 mm width**, and an integrated **vulcanised EPDM gasket** expanded by an internal packer. To deploy our [Large-Diameter Instant-Lock Sleeves](https://reliancetrenchless.com/en-GB/products/instant-lock-sleeves-large) successfully, contractors must understand how the structural shell, locking gear, and installation tooling coordinate.

## Structural makeup: 3 mm stainless shell and vulcanised EPDM gasket

Unlike small-diameter sleeves that use thin gauge steel, a DN700 sleeve must resist substantial external hydrostatic groundwater pressure and soil loading.

**DN700 Instant-Lock mechanical construction:** 3 mm rolled stainless shell, vulcanised EPDM sealing profile, and heavy-duty gear lock mechanism at 12 o'clock.

The physical construction comprises three primary elements:

- **Austenitic Stainless Steel Shell (AISI 304L or 316L):** Rolled from heavy 3.0 mm sheet plate, delivering standalone ring stiffness that bridges missing pipe fragments and arrests crack propagation without bonding agents.
- **Continuous EPDM Elastomeric Profile:** The exterior of the stainless shell is encased in a specially ribbed EPDM rubber seal meeting [EN 681-1](https://www.en-standard.eu/bs-en-681-1-1996-elastomeric-seals-material-requirements-for-pipe-joint-seals-used-in-water-and-drainage-applications-vulcanized-rubber/) standards. Under compression, the raised sealing lips deform plastically into surface pits and imperfections of concrete, clay, or GRP pipe walls.
- **Overlap Transition Chamfer:** The leading edge of the rolled shell is precision-beveled so that when expanded against the pipe circumference, it leaves an ultra-low hydraulic profile that will not catch solids or snag sewer cleaning jets.

## The mechanical ratchet gear and positive lock mechanism at 12 o'clock

The core innovation of the Instant-Lock system is its non-reversing mechanical lock:

- **Orientation at 12 O'Clock:** During pre-installation rigging, the sleeve is pre-crimped around the deflated packer with its longitudinal locking gear strip aligned strictly at the pipe crown (12 o'clock position). This keeps the mechanism out of the invert where grit and abrasive bedload travel.
- **Directional Ratchet Teeth:** High-tensile stainless steel locking teeth engage progressively as the packer expands.
- **Zero Creep Retention:** Once the expansion pressure drives the teeth into full engagement, the sleeve cannot contract. Unlike resin point repairs that require hours of chemical hardening and are vulnerable to matrix creep, the mechanical lock holds immediately upon pressure release.

**Trenchless installation sequence:** 1 positioning sleeve at defect, 2 inflating packer to expand ratchet gear, 3 permanent mechanical lock against pipe wall.

## Packer transport, inflation stages, and diameter expansion

Installing a DN700 sleeve requires a dedicated large-diameter wheeled pneumatic packer:

1. **Pre-Clamping on Surface:** The sleeve is wrapped symmetrically around the packer bladder and secured with certified sacrificial holding bands.
2. **CCTV-Guided Positioning:** The wheeled packer assembly is winched down the manhole and pulled along the invert under real-time CCTV camera inspection until the sleeve is centered over the defect.
3. **Dual-Stage Inflation:**

   - _Stage 1 (Pre-Shaping):_ Air pressure is applied up to **1.5 bar** to gently round out the sleeve against the pipe perimeter while checking axial alignment on the CCTV monitor. - _Stage 2 (Final Locking):_ Pressure is increased to **3.0 bar** (for gravity wastewater) or **5.5 bar** (for pressurized lines). This forces the EPDM ribs into deep compression and seats the ratchet gear teeth into their final mechanical interlock.

1. **Deflation & Flow Restoration:** The packer is fully deflated and winched out. Flow can be restored to the pipeline immediately—no cure time, no toxic washout.

## Inspection and dimensional verification records for large point repairs

As documented in [Sterling et al. (2010)](https://nepis.epa.gov/Exe/ZyPURL.cgi?Dockey=P1009K0M.txt) in the EPA Trenchless Sewer Rehabilitation Guidelines, successful mechanical sleeve installation requires verifying host pipe geometry:

- **Host Pipe Internal Diameter (ID):** Accurate measurement of actual ID is crucial. If the pipe is severely ovalised beyond 3%, a custom sleeve diameter or pre-jack rounding must be specified.
- **Post-Installation Video Record:** Perform a 360-degree pan-and-tilt CCTV inspection. Verify that the EPDM gasket is uniformly compressed at both ends and that the locking strip at 12 o'clock is fully seated.
- **Material Certification:** In aggressive industrial or hydrogen sulfide environments, verify whether 316L stainless steel is required rather than standard 304L.
