A clear definition of trenchless work: access-point methods for buried pipes, plus the difference between installation, replacement and rehabilitation.
Watch on YouTubeThis explainer defines trenchless as a family of access-point methods and separates installation, replacement and rehabilitation. Equipment selection depends on measured pipe size, defect, access, flow and treatment boundary; confirm the method and equipment with Reliance.

What does trenchless mean? It means the work reaches the buried pipe through selected access points, instead of opening a continuous trench along the route. The word describes the route to the pipe, not one single product or machine. The route may use a manhole, a cleanout, or another access point. The key idea is simple: no continuous open trench along the pipe's path. The surface can remain open for traffic, paving, landscaping or a building above it. But the pipe still needs a documented entry route and a method that fits its condition. Before choosing equipment, ask which of three jobs the project needs. Install a new pipe through the ground. Replace the existing pipe with another pipe. Or rehabilitate the pipe that is already there. Replacement can use pipe bursting: the old pipe is broken while a new pipe is drawn into its position. That is still a trenchless family method, but it may need launch, exit or service-connection excavation. For rehabilitation, the work stays inside the host pipe. A longer damaged section may receive a liner, while a defined local defect may receive a point repair. CIPP uses resin-impregnated material positioned inside the pipe and cured in place. A mechanical sleeve is another local method, and it does not use resin curing. If the inspection finds one local defect, the treatment can stay local. A repair packer carries a resin-and-fiberglass patch to the defect, presses it against the wall and holds it while it cures. The packer is removed after curing. The patch remains in the pipe. Reliance repair packers are made for this localized repair duty. The published range is standard DN50 to DN1500, with bypass models from DN100 to DN1500. An Instant-Lock sleeve is a different local repair route: stainless steel and an EPDM jacket are installed from inside the host pipe. The Small family is published for DN150 to DN600, and the Large family for DN600 to DN2000. For leakage at a joint between pipe sections, an internal pipe joint seal is another inside-the-pipe solution. The starting point is inspection, not a product name. A CCTV record should identify the pipe, defect locations, connections and obstructions. Then send the information that makes the method reviewable. Measured internal diameter and pipe material. Defect location, length and distribution. Access points, connections and flow conditions. The proposed treatment boundary and acceptance requirements. Trenchless is a method family, not a promise that every job avoids every excavation. Use the inspection and the access conditions to decide whether the work is local, longer, replacement, or open excavation. Send Reliance your measured pipe size, inspection record and access conditions, and we can review the matching localized-repair equipment.
