Internal Pipe Repair Sleeve or Sectional Point Repair?

An internal pipe repair sleeve locks mechanically with nothing to cure; a sectional patch cures in place. Choose by measured bore, defect and site.

Application Overview

The sleeve sizes, fit windows, inflation pressures and resin curing times are Reliance's published records for the stated formulations and service conditions. Confirm the measured inside diameter, the defect length and the available working window with the project team; neither repair is universally faster, cheaper or longer-lasting.

  1. 010:00Internal pipe repair sleeve or resin patch?

One crack in a sewer. Two ways to repair it from inside. An internal pipe repair sleeve, or a sectional point repair patch? The sleeve is a four-hundred-millimetre band of stainless steel and rubber. The patch is resin and fiberglass that cures in about forty minutes on a summer formulation. One locks. One cures. Which one fits your defect?

  2. 020:21How an internal pipe repair sleeve locks in place

First, the sleeve. It rides in rolled up, on an installation packer. The packer inflates. A toothed strip slides past a locking gear: it opens, but can't close. The packer leaves. The sleeve stays locked, and its rubber jacket seals the crack. The brochure gives the inflation for each service. Above three bar for wastewater sleeves. Above five point five bar for drinking-water sleeves. Then a second inflation checks that the gear is fastened. No resin is mixed, and nothing has to cure. But a sleeve is a fixed product. Each size fits a window of measured bore. A DN300 sleeve fits pipe from two hundred and thirty to three hundred and five millimetres inside. The Small range runs DN150 to 600. Larger pipes, DN600 to 2000, use Instant-Lock Large. So the first question for a sleeve is: is your measured bore inside a window?

  3. 031:17How a sectional point repair patch cures in place

Now the same crack, with a patch: resin-soaked fiberglass on a pipe repair packer. The packer inflates, presses the patch onto the wall, and holds while the resin cures. Then it comes out. The cured patch stays. That is a sectional point repair. The resin comes as two parts, A and B, mixed one to two by volume. Once the two parts are mixed, the working clock starts. And curing time depends on the season. About forty minutes on the summer formulation, sixty in spring, ninety in winter. So a patch needs a planned working window on site. A patch is cut and layered for the pipe on site. The dosage table runs from DN100 to DN1000, so it also covers bores below the smallest sleeve. Which brings us to the choice.

  4. 042:04Sleeve or patch: how to choose a trenchless pipe repair

So, sleeve or patch? Start from the defect, not the catalogue. If the measured bore sits inside a sleeve window, a sleeve is a candidate. If there is no time on site for resin to cure, the mechanical lock has nothing to wait for. If the bore is under DN150, or the defect needs a patch cut to length, look at resin and fiberglass. If you can plan the cure window, the patch is a candidate too. What you should not do is pick by a slogan. Neither one is always faster, cheaper or longer-lasting. Ask for two proposals against the same defect, the same access and the same service, and compare them like for like.

  5. 052:43The five details for a sleeve or patch proposal

To get both proposals, send five details. The measured inside diameter at the defect, and the pipe material. The defect type and its length, with CCTV if you have it. The access, and whether you already have a packer. For a sleeve, wastewater or drinking water. For a patch, the site temperature. And the quantity, the destination, and the date you need it on site. Send us your measured bore and defect. We will match a sleeve, a patch, or both.
